Gifted Students

A gifted student is a learner with exceptional ability.
Some characteristics of gifted students are: 

  • Problem solving
  • Creativity
  • Elaboration
  • Ability to learn quickly
  • Independent way of thinking
  • Ability to finish task easier
  • Curiosity
  • High level of thinking
  • Challenging
  • Criticizing judgment  
There are many problems the teacher face with gifted students such as: 

  • Easily bored
  • Disrupting class
  • Authority-resistant
  • Being absent minded regarding practical details
  • Finishes assignment quickly but sloppily
  • Resistant to repetition and memorization
  • Criticize others
  • Perceived as "know it all by pears"
  • Dominate in group
  • Becomes the clown of the class.   
We can find many tips and strategies that can help teachers in teaching gifted students
  1. Familiarize yourself with the characteristics of intellectually gifted students to be able to recognize gifted students, and to know their levels.
  2. Let it go of "normal". Be ready to have extracurricular activities for gifted students suitable for their ability for them to work on when they finish their class work early.
  3. Conduct informal assessment before teaching. Create activities to evaluate students ' level before teaching them so as to decide what they need to learn.
  4. Familiarize yourself with Piaget and Bloom. According to Piaget, gifted students are often in their formal operational stage. As for Bloom activities should provide the opportunities to use high level thinking skills such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.
  5. Involve parents as resource locators, teachers should collaborate with parents of gifted students to show them the importance of flexibility in teaching gifted students.
  6. Allow students to experiment with higher levels. Don't limit them.
  7. Ask the gifted students to help his or her peers.
  8. Allow gifted students to move ahead only when they complete the designed activity.
  9. The teacher should be always updating the repertoire of teaching strategies to match the gifted students' needs.
