The Purposes of Assessment

It is important that teachers be clear about the purpose of assessment and that students be clear too. Strange as it may sound, students often will not know the purpose of a particular assessment unless teachers tell them directly and that rarely happens. We could count on one hand the number of teachers we have observed in any year who differentiate summative tests and diagnostic tests for students.Telling students, "This test is just to see what you have learned so far," does not make distinction. It does not tell students what you are going to do with the results. There are many reasons for doing assessment with students. Teachers try to use tests for two or more purposes at the same time for example, getting grades to rank students for honor roll and diagnosing student weaknesses for reteaching. Teachers should teach students concepts that benefit them in their lives and not only just to take grades to evaluate their works, or assignments. Because many students just study for the exam the materials that are given to them, but after the exam these materials will be forgotten.

  1. Assessment is very important which requires the teacher to assess the students achievement of the learning targets .If the teaching process is clear and correct the student wouldn't forget the information that studied .

  2. Assessment it is not like what most of teachers think, it is not only the process of grading but it is the process of gathering information about students to make better decisions regarding students, curriculum, or educational policy. When teachers tend to miss-understood the purpose of assessing students the process might go wrong and students will be grade oriented. All students once a topic is explained they will ask Is it important? You will ask questions about it in the exam? all they care about is exams and grades rather than knowledge. I think the problem begins with the administration when they tend to emphasize on gathering grades within certain time, we should change the beliefs of the whole educational system in order to achieve our goal in allowing students to study not only for exams but for their self knowledge.

  3. Assessment was to me defined as evaluating students' achievements to assign grades for them. However, and after registering my assessment course, my view about assessment and evaluating students behaviors and work have totally changed. I have learnt that testing is but one tool of assessing students. I have also seen the different ways that I can assess a student with. Crafting assessment requires hard work starting from planning to scoring students work. I really advise teacher to take such a course and update their definition of assessment.

  4. Most of the teacher focuses in summative assessment to evaluate the students and take serious decisions about each one of them, since people belief that numbers has the power of convincing, yet it’s not fair and reliable to focus only on pencil and paper test, students should be given many chances to demonstrate their abilities and assessment should be done to improve students’ performance not only to evaluate them. Schools should take into consideration also formative assessment and all other ways that help students.
